Beyond the Trading Desk: The talent behind a successful Multi-Asset Brokerage

By Lisa Paton | Multi-Asset Brokerage Recruitment | Meraki Talent

When people think about recruitment within the multi-asset brokerage sector, their minds often turn immediately to trading, dealing and sales. These are undoubtedly important functions, but they represent only part of the talent required to build, operate and grow a successful brokerage business.

The reality I see in my job is that today's multi-asset brokerages are complex, internationally connected organisations, requiring an increasingly diverse range of specialist and leadership capabilities. This goes from commercial expansion and regional management to financial control, regulatory compliance, technology, marketing and operational leadership and it is clear that the demands placed on brokerage businesses extend well beyond the trading desk.

For those of us working closely with businesses across this sector, that diversity is one of the most interesting aspects of the recruitment market.

Commercial Leadership and International Growth

Growth remains a fundamental priority for brokerage businesses, but achieving it requires considerably more than simply expanding a regional sales team. International markets bring different regulatory environments, commercial expectations, distribution models and consumer behaviours. Successfully entering or developing a new regional market requires leaders who understand these differences and can translate commercial ambition into sustainable business growth.

In 2026, my recruitment activity has included senior regional leadership appointments covering Asia-Pacific, Thailand and Vietnam, alongside mandates for Heads of China, EMEA leadership and senior business development professionals, to name just a few roles.

These appointments illustrate the importance of finding individuals who combine commercial experience with genuine regional expertise. The example of a successful Head of Region requires a search beyond an established network. The candidates must understand market entry, partnerships, local competition, regulatory considerations and how to build teams capable of delivering long-term results. For brokerage businesses expanding internationally, securing the right leadership can be one of the most consequential decisions they make.

Risk, Compliance and Governance: Leadership that protects growth

Commercial expansion is just one side of the equation because as brokerage businesses grow, their governance, risk management and regulatory responsibilities become increasingly complex. Take senior appointments such as Heads of Compliance, Heads of Risk and Fraud, Money Laundering Reporting Officers (MLROs) and General Counsels.

These play a critical role in ensuring that businesses can operate confidently and responsibly and demand a particular combination of technical knowledge, regulatory understanding, commercial judgement and leadership capability.

In my personal experience, businesses need professionals who can engage constructively with commercial colleagues while maintaining the independence and authority required of their function. I always look for the strongest candidates who understand that effective governance is not simply about preventing problems, but actually creating the foundations on which a business can grow sustainably.

With brokerage operations frequently spanning multiple jurisdictions, the ability to navigate differing regulatory expectations adds another layer of complexity to these senior appointments.

Operations, finance and the infrastructure of a Brokerage

Behind every successful brokerage sits an operational and financial infrastructure that must perform consistently, often across multiple markets and time zones. Roles which a pivotal in this include senior Operations Leaders, Group Financial Controllers and HR Operations Directors who are all central to that infrastructure.

Recent appointments within my specialist area have included Head of Operations and Group Financial Controller positions, reflecting the breadth of leadership expertise required beyond the more visible commercial functions. These roles required individuals who understand both the technical demands of their discipline and the particular operating environment of a brokerage business.

A senior finance professional, for example, must bring financial reporting, control and governance expertise, but also appreciate the commercial and operational dynamics of the sector. Similarly, an experienced Head of Operations needs to balance efficiency, systems, service delivery, risk and the practical demands of supporting a growing international organisation.

The ability to bring together functional expertise and sector understanding is often what differentiates an excellent candidate from a merely qualified one.

Trading, quantitative expertise and specialist technical talent

Of course, trading and dealing remain essential components of the multi-asset brokerage recruitment landscape, but even within these disciplines, the range of expertise required can be considerable.

Senior Dealers and Heads of Quantitative functions bring highly specialised capabilities that are not easily interchangeable with those found elsewhere in financial services. Market knowledge, execution, pricing, risk exposure, analytical capability and an understanding of trading infrastructure can all be important, depending on the business model and responsibilities of the role.

Recruiting successfully into these areas requires an appreciation of the technical requirements, but also an understanding of how the position contributes to the wider business and I have found that even if a candidate's experience may look impressive on paper, the suitability of their experience for a particular brokerage environment is often where the real recruitment challenge begins.

A truly international talent market

One of the defining characteristics of multi-asset brokerage recruitment is its international nature. My work involves businesses and professionals connected with the UK, Cyprus, Asia-Pacific, China, Thailand, Vietnam and the wider EMEA region and the geographic diversity is significant, but so too are the differences between individual markets.

A senior commercial leader who has successfully developed one region will not automatically possess the relationships, cultural understanding or market knowledge required to achieve the same results elsewhere and equally, regulatory, operational and leadership requirements can vary considerably between jurisdictions.

This is why specialist recruitment within the sector is about much more than matching job titles to CVs but requires an understanding of the business, the market in which it operates, the challenges it faces and the particular combination of experience and personal qualities needed to make an appointment successful.

The value of understanding the whole business

Looking across the senior appointments and recruitment mandates I have worked on during 2026, one thing stands out: the extraordinary range of skills required to operate a successful multi-asset brokerage.

From regional CEOs and commercial leaders to compliance specialists, financial controllers, operations directors and quantitative professionals, each function contributes something different. In my view increasingly, the most important appointments require candidates who can look beyond their own specialism and understand the wider commercial objectives of the organisation.

For me, this is what makes working within the multi-asset brokerage sector so rewarding because is not simply about understanding a particular job function, but understanding how the different parts of a brokerage business fit together, and recognising the people who can make a meaningful difference to its performance.

Whether a business is entering a new market, strengthening its governance, building its commercial leadership team or developing its operational capabilities, access to the right specialist talent can be a decisive advantage.

At Meraki Talent, I work with brokerage businesses and professionals across these disciplines, supporting appointments that reflect the breadth, complexity and international nature of the sector. If you're considering a senior appointment, exploring opportunities within the multi-asset brokerage market or simply interested in discussing the talent challenges facing the industry, I'd welcome a conversation.
